Community Cover Contribution Rules
Community Covers create original, rights-aware visual identities for eligible books that lack a usable cover. They are community interpretations, not official publisher editions.
1. Eligible books
A cover brief may be opened only after the underlying work and intended use have been assessed. Eligibility does not mean every element or modern edition is public domain.
2. Originality
The cover must be original or use components with licenses compatible with the submission license. Do not trace, imitate, or substantially reproduce a commercial cover, protected character, photograph, illustration, logo, or distinctive composition without permission.
3. Source record
The submission must identify fonts, images, textures, public-domain sources, stock licenses, collaborators, and AI tools. Keep working files and evidence of permission.
4. AI assistance
AI-assisted work is allowed only when the specific brief permits it. The contributor must disclose the tool and process, review for copied or misleading elements, and remain responsible for rights and quality. Do not use a real person's likeness misleadingly or imitate a living artist in a way prohibited by the brief.
5. Accuracy and representation
Do not falsely present the cover as an official publisher edition. Avoid invented awards, endorsements, publisher logos, edition claims, or misleading historical details. The title and author must match the canonical record unless the brief states otherwise.
6. Accessibility and technical requirements
The cover should remain legible at thumbnail size and meet the file, dimensions, safe-area, contrast, and alt-text requirements in the brief. Do not rely only on color to convey essential meaning.
7. Sensitive material
Avoid gratuitous violence, sexual exploitation, hate imagery, dehumanization, privacy violations, and culturally insensitive use of sacred or traditional material. Historical representation may be accepted with appropriate context.
8. Submission license
The exact license must be displayed before submission. The contributor must retain a copy of the accepted version. Langa Library must not request rights broader than necessary for display, preservation, accessibility, promotion, and reuse described by the program.
9. Credit
Published covers should show the contributor's selected credit and, where practical, source and license information. Community credit may appear in Supporters' or Contributors' Corner and may support a verified contribution certificate.
10. Review
Review may cover rights, originality, metadata accuracy, visual quality, cultural context, accessibility, technical format, and consistency. Acceptance is discretionary. A cover may be replaced or removed if later evidence creates a rights, safety, attribution, or quality concern.
11. No employment or guarantee
Participation does not guarantee publication, permanence, payment, employment, access privileges, or certification. Any paid commission requires a separate written agreement.
